ADDRESS: 355 & 385 Canterbury Drive, Fredericton, N.B., E3B 1J3 LOCATION: Uptown, residential subdivision on the east side of Fredericton with municipal bus service and an elementary school across the street. Located on the corner of Canterbury Drive and Liverpool St., this location has easy access to Fredericton’s uptown shopping areas and hospital are , via the Vanier Highway. A walking path connects the subdivision to the Aitkin Centre on The University of New Brunswick Campus which is about a 15 minute walk from the building. BUILDING TYPE: Two contemporary buildings with balconies. 24 units each. NAME ORIGIN: When the wooded area was developed in the 1960’s by Fredericton Housing, the subdivision was named Skyline Acres by the president’s wife , Edith Bird, due to its location on the brow of the river valley. The corner lots were reserved for higher density by city planners and were called Skyline Plaza. The streets in the area were named after English towns, reflecting the connection of Fredericton’s original Loyalist settlers to the British Crown. HISTORY: Built in 1964, 355 & 385 Canterbury Dr. were the second set of modern multi -family apartment buildings built in the Fredericton area. Engineered by Stirling Gorham, it represented an alternative lifestyle of affordable accommodation with outdoor features such as balconies, green space and abundant parking.
